I thought I’d kick off my posts on food, by sharing a little of my background, my likes, my dislikes, my obsessions and my guilty pleasures.
I sincerely invite comments and opinions, and would love to receive recommendations that might be applicable.
So, a lot of what I eat when out in restaurants, on holiday, etc, is dictated by the fact that I have a tree nut and seed allergy.
I was diagnosed when I was 7 years’ old, so I have grown up with these allergies, and don’t really remember any differently to always having to remind friends, family (distant), waiters/waitresses, that I am allergic, and am so used to checking my food that it’s practically second nature.
As you’d imagine, it does impose some limitations. I was advised never to venture to Indian, Chinese or Asian cuisine. I decided to think of this information as that intended for my much younger self.
As I have grown up, I determined that being that restricted as a foodie would not suit me. And so, within reason, I go wherever I want, but am still a neurotic, paranoid nut case (pardon the pun!).
In terms of what I like, I could probably compose a never-ending list, but some of my favourites include (and please excuse the randomness of this list):
- Roast chicken with all the trimmings
- Nachos
- Peanut butter!
- Porridge bowls
- Hearty soups
- Halloumi
- Avocado and egg dishes
- Huge (not boring) salads
- Sweet potato
- Pretty much anything roasted (except, bizarrely, potatoes!)
I’m not such a fan of dishes that are meals in themselves, i.e. shepherds pie, cottage pie, etc. I don’t particularly like fried food, steak, or spring onion. But (off the top of my head) I pretty much like or love everything else!
I wholeheartedly intend to share with you my top tips on dining out as an allergy sufferer, or as the friend or acquaintance of an allergy sufferer; my favourite restaurants; my most popular delicious recipes; and of course, my healthy tips, because let’s face it, #foodielife is majorly restricted these days by living a #balancedlife.
As always, please share any comments, experiences and tips you might have, as well as asking any questions on the content I share with you!
So, keep your eyes peeled for everything #foodie.
